American Sheep Industry Association officials confirm their industry has been granted a thirty day extension to comment on scrapie rules and regulations. ASI Executive Director Peter Orwick says the nationwide eradication program was launched in 2000 and is just now getting updated. He says extending the deadline to comment from November 9 to December 9 is needed in order to get more input from animal health officials.
Orwick says the scrapie eradication program has been effective since it began with the eventual goal to rid the country of the disease.
He says it’s important to be able to prove the sheep industry is free of the disease in order to overcome export barriers.
Orwick says to view ASI’s comments or to give your own comments on the regulation just go to their website at sheepusa.org.
