United States Animal Health officials along with the National Pork Producers Council are monitoring what’s happening with African Swine Fever and other foreign animal diseases and working on prevention efforts to keep them out of the U.S. NPPC Chief Veterinarian Dr. Liz Wagstrom says one of their major concerns is the increased importation of rescue dogs from countries with foreign animal diseases.
She says there needs to be safety protocols put in place if these rescue dogs are to be allowed into the U.S..
Wagstrom says they’d like to see USDA write regulations that would protect the food animal industry from these type of occurrences.
Wagstrom says they’re also keeping an eye on China to see what is happening with the spread of ASF.
Wagstrom says the U.S. has also recently put an agreement in place with Canada to guard against feral hogs contracting ASF or any foreign animal disease.
