ASA Wants EU Pressed to Approve Biotech Traits

American Soybean Association leaders are urging U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman and Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack to press the European Commission to approve three biotech soybean traits. ASA Board member and South Dakota soybean grower Kevin Scott says the three including Monsanto’s Roundup Ready 2 Xtend soybeans with dicamba tolerance have been awaiting approval since January.

The other two soybean traits are Monsanto’s Vistive Gold high oleic beans and Bayer Crop Science’s isoxaflutole tolerant beans. Scott says all three would benefit the EU’s livestock, poultry and feed industries.

Scott says despite continued pressure by the U.S. the Europeans have been holding up these biotech approvals.

Scott says timely approval of these traits would avoid the risk of unnecessary costs and disruptions in the market.
