United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer told House Ways and Means Committee members Wednesday that every indication is that in spite of the pandemic China will follow through with their phase one trade deal with the U.S.
American Soybean Association Vice President and Valley Springs South Dakota grower Kevin Scott says that’s encouraging for producers who need some good news.
China is far behind on its targeted purchase of U.S. goods but Scott says that’s not surprising given the impacts of the pandemic as well as some other factors including their dealing with African Swine Fever.
Scott says the USTR and his assistants have been working hard for trade agreements and have been quite successful so far.
The next deals the USTR’s office is working on include both the United Kingdom and the European Union. Talks with the U.K. are going on this week while negotiations with the E.U. have stalled recently.
