A group of upper Midwest Senators have introduced legislation to crack down on trade cheating. Lawmakers say the Play by the Rules Act will hold China accountable for ignoring trade rules. American Soybean Association Vice President and Minnesota farmer Bill Gordon says that’s been one of the major issues with the trade war is China not obeying world trade rules.
The legislation provides the U.S. Commerce Department with more flexibility when reviewing anti circumvention petitions filed against non-market economies like China. Gordon says that component will help put pressure on those nations with non-market economies to follow world trade standards.
He says because the bill has bi-partisan backing that gives it a greater chance of passing.
Most of the bill’s components include the rules set by the World Trade Organization of which the U.S. and China are members.
