ASA Says EU Must Include Agriculture In Trade Discussions

European Union officials don’t want agriculture included in any trade discussions between them and the United States. American Soybean Association Vice President Bill Gordon who farms near Worthington, Minnesota says there can’t really be a trade agreement without agriculture and the acceptance of biotechnology as part of it.

President Donald Trump is threatening tariffs against the E.U. if they don’t bring agriculture to the trade negotiating table. Gordon doesn’t believe that’s the right approach although taking a hard stance sometimes is the only way to proceed.

He says any trade deal must benefit all the countries involved and the E.U. should understand their farmers do have some advantages.

The tariffs President Trump is talking about would be on European automobiles and if he proceeds with that, the E.U. seems likely to retaliate with tariffs on U.S. wine and dairy.
