The European Court of Justice has ruled that member state governments cannot ban the cultivation of genetically engineered crops without scientific evidence they’re a human health risk. American Soybean Association President Ron Moore hails the decision. He says the ruling throws out the EU’s use of the precautionary principle which allowed them to ban biotech products based on unscientific standards.
He says now if the E.U. continues to ban biotech products based on the precautionary principle they’re throwing up a trade barrier that can be challenged in the WTO.
Moore is hoping this will lead to U.S. biotech crops being exported to E.U. countries.
Moore says previous biotech restrictions put in place by the E.U. were put there despite the products being approved by the European Food Safety Authority, as well as numerous other food safety and global health agencies.
