ASA President Pleased USDA Moving To Finalize Biotech Labeling Rule

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue says the USDA will finalize the Biotech Labeling law mandated by Congress yet this year. American Soybean Association President and Iowa grower John Heisdorffer is pleased USDA is moving forward with implementation because having a national rule in place is essential to prevent consumer confusion and increased cost for the food industry.

He says having the labeling law in place is important because most of the soybeans grown in the U.S. are biotech.

Heisdorffer says its critical the final labeling rule only mandates real biotech products be labeled as such.

The USDA missed an earlier deadline set by Congress to have the biotech labeling law finalized and implemented by July 29 of this year. Perdue says that was due to delays in the rulemaking process.
