The latest round of Trans Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership talks found the U.S. and European Union at odds over Genetically Modified Organisms. American Soybean Association President Ray Gaesser says it’s disappointing the E.U. is standing by its stiff regulations for GM products and not following sound science.
Gaesser says ASA has been able to make inroads with European Union farmers on biotech approvals but it’s still a long process getting over the strict regulatory hurdles.
An E.U. negotiator says individual applications of GMOS can be discussed but there will be no change in their regulatory structure. U.S. negotiators continue to call for regulation based on science.
