Argentinian officials are concerned with the announcement by Brazil and the United States that Brazil will open a 750,000 metric ton tariff quota for imports of wheat from the U.S. and other global suppliers. Under the present Mercosur regulations Brazil must request permission from Argentina to carry that out. National Association of Wheat Grower’s CEO Chandler Goule says he’s hopeful Argentina will allow Brazil to carry out the tariff rate quota under their WTO obligations.

He’s concerned Argentina may attempt to get leverage with the TRQ issue to gain a trade advantage over the U.S.

Goule is hoping that Argentina gives permission to Brazil on the TRQ obligation as just a formality.

Argentina’s government has started talks with Brazil and other Mercosur partners to analyze the impact and consequences the TRQ will have on bilateral trade.
