For the first time in 25 years U.S. pork is being allowed back into Argentina. Last week U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue announced the re-opening. National Pork Producers Council’s Director of International Affairs Maria Zieba says that’s welcome news for the U.S. pork industry, as product will start flowing right away.
She says the key to the reopening of the Argentine market was having a new administration in place in Argentina that favors trade.
Zieba says its important the United States doesn’t let up on trade as opening new markets and expanding existing markets is critical.
Zieba says Argentina has the potential to be a $10 million a year market for U.S. pork producers. She says they have a population of 44 million and a per capita income of $17,250 which is higher than Mexico’s.
