An initiative that began five years ago to preserve the Ogallala Aquifer will continue.
The vast aquifer lies underneath eight states. It has three sub-sections with the southern section in Texas and New Mexico under the most strain.
Nebraska State Conservationist Craig Derickson with the USDA says efforts to conserve water from the Ogallala have made a real impact on the northern portion in Nebraska and Kansas. . .

Derickson says the initiative relies heavily on the cooperation of farmers and ranchers. . .

Derickson says the USDA will sort through a number of proposals to choose which might help keep the Ogallala flowing as well as improve its water quality and enhance its economic viability for crops and pastures.
