South Dakota has seen its first cases of anthrax this year confirmed in the western part of the state. State Veterinarian Dr. Dustin Oedekoven says nine cattle from a herd in Pennington County died from the disease. He says drought and a significant change in climate conditions bring on increased risk of anthrax.

He recommends livestock operations in or near the area where the outbreak occurred consider vaccinating.

Oedekoven says producers should consult with their local vet on vaccinations.

Oedekoven says South Dakota had its worst outbreak of anthrax in 2005 when 55 cases were reported, many of them along the Missouri River. He says 2005 was a drought year.
