The Yankton County Commission has been spending a lot of time on roads and bridges this year.
At their meeting Tuesday it was bridges.
The commission had earlier authorized the county highway department to add rip rap protection to the “Johnson Bridge” over the James River. Water flowing through there is scouring on the west bank under the bridge approach.
Members of the Lower James River District were at the meeting with concerns with the effect of adding more rock to the flow of the river.
Commission Chairman Todd Woods says they are going to stay with their engineers assessment of the bridge….
Woods says they hoped to get the rock work done before the ground around the bridge thawed….
There are also issues with the river banks round the bridge on old Highway 50 northeast of Yankton. Woods says they don’t have any additional plans for that structure….
Woods says they are concerned with rising costs for additional bridge and road projects.
