Earlier this week a pair of Animal Disease Preparedness seminars held in Huron and Sioux Falls drew over 100 attendees. SDSU Extension Swine Specialist Dr. Bob Thaler says there were about 40 at the Huron meeting and close to 70 in Sioux Falls. He says there was a lot of interest in both African Swine Fever and Foot and Mouth Disease and that the best thing that came out of PED virus was the realization that type of thing can show up and how important it is to be prepared.
He says producers need to take precautions and be on the outlook for any sign of a foreign animal disease.
Thaler says the Secure Pork Supply plan is one of the best ways to prepare for any foreign animal disease outbreak because it will allow areas that get the disease to be quarantined and other areas to be able to still export product.
Thaler says there haven’t been any new meetings scheduled but that they may look at that following planting season later this summer.
