A bill that authorizes the construction of a new animal diagnostic lab at SDSU in Brookings passed out of the legislature’s Joint Appropriations Committee.

The bill (SB172) has been amended to include funding provisions that will be referenced in the state aid to education funding bill. (SB35)

Nathan Sanderson of the Governor’s Office says the bill was amended to use property tax cuts that were authorized by last year’s half cent sales tax increase bill……

Sanderson says the property tax needed will be including in SB35, which sets property tax levies….

Senator John Wiik of Big Stone City says the need for the lab is obvious…..

The bill passed on a sixteen to zero vote, with a do pass recommendation. It will now have to be approved by both Houses.

The funding would provide about three point three million dollars a year to pay off just over fifty million dollars in state bonds. The lab will cost around sixty million dollars.
