The American Veterinary Medical College and Association of Public Land Grant Universities have formed a task force to advise the federal government on putting out information on the use of antibiotics in production agriculture. Task Force member Dr. Andy Maccabe, Executive Director of AAVMC says antibiotic resistance is a public health challenge and their group is anxious to work on the issue. He says they’re facing many challenges going forward.
He says they also need to find other ways of treating and preventing human diseases without using antibiotics. Maccabe also says they want to find viable answers rather than placing blame for the problem.
The task force has a dozen members including Dr. Maccabe, and NPPC Chief Veterinarian Dr. Liz Wagstrom as well as Dr. Ronnie Green of UNL. There are also four ex officio members.
