The Animal Agriculture Alliance is monitoring the House Ag Committee’s draft of the 2018 farm bill which was sent to the floor this week for an amendment that could impact livestock care and welfare. The Alliance’s Hannah Thompson Weeman says California Congressman Jeff Denham offered an amendment that bans the slaughtering of dogs and cats. She says the concern is the possibility of that ban spilling over to farm animals in the future.

She says the amendment could set a dangerous precedent for future regulations or laws.

Weeman says they’ll be following the debate on this topic as the legislation progresses in both the House and Senate.

Weeman says they’ll look at the House farm bill amendment and other issues important to agriculture at their Alliance Stakeholders Summit set for May 3 and 4 in Arlington, Virginia.
