Animal welfare activists including the Humane Society of the United States are trying to influence members of Congressional Ag Committees on the next farm bill. HSUS is proposing a pair of measures including one to outlaw meat from dogs and cats to be traded and another to prohibit practices like soring which they claim give horses an exaggerated gait. Hannah Thompson Weeman with the Animal Ag Alliance says they’re watching the developments and encouraging producers to weigh in on the farm bill.
She says many lawmakers are far removed from agriculture, so that makes it even more important farmers and ranchers educate them on various agricultural issues.
Weeman says HSUS officials know Congress is split on many issues and they will take advantage of that to push their ant- agriculture agenda.
There is a possibility HSUS may attempt to get another measure included in the farm bill that would provide protections for pets in domestic violence cases.
