A ranking by the website SafeWise.com has created a list of the safest cities in each state in the region. SafeWise is an organization dedicated to educating people about the importance of home safety and providing resources to increase the safety within homes and communities, according to Community Safety Expert, Holly King.

King says the rankings were based upon an analysis of the FBI crime reports that are voluntarily submitted by cities. The cities are then ranked by the number of times a crime is likely to occur per 1,000 residents.

According to the ranking, Springfield is South Dakota’s safest city, followed by Brookings. O’Neill and Auburn top Nebraska’s list. King says the region is relatively safe when compared to national statistics.

King says the study included communities with 1,500 or more residents that submitted their crime data to the FBI uniform crime reporting during 2012.  The full report can be found at http://www.safewise.com/blog/10-safest-cities-south-dakota/.
