Geographic indicators have been a trade barrier the European Union has used to keep out U.S. dairy products and take advantage of the markets by being protectionist. South Dakota Dairy Producer’s President Marv Post says it’s concerning that the E.U. and China have just signed a geographic indicators agreement. He says that will give the E.U. a trade advantage over the U.S. in trading with China.
He says what benefits the U.S. when it comes to trading dairy products is America’s superior quality versus our foreign competitors.
Post says the U.S. needs to remain in a position to meet the needs of our export customers and overcome any government interference or trade barriers.
Under the E.U. Chinese geographical indicator agreement, each country has 100 products protected. The deal is scheduled to go into effect at the beginning of 2021.
