The National Pork Producers Council and three other American ag groups are calling on U.S. negotiators to complete the Trans Pacific Partnership without Japan. NPPC President Dr. Howard Hill says his group is very disappointed Japan is refusing to eliminate its tariffs and non trade barriers and says they should be left out if they continue holding firm to that.
Hill says if Japan is allowed to keep their tariffs, then other countries in the TPP and other deals will want the same consideration.
Hill says if the TPP isn’t negotiated properly and Japan brought into line it doesn’t bode well for a successful T-TIP agreement with the European Union.
NAWG, the U.S. Wheat Association, and USA Rice Federation are joining NPPC in asking for Japan’s exclusion if tariffs aren’t brought to zero.
