All-Pro defensive end Jared Allen has signed a one-day contract with Minnesota to officially retire as a Viking.

The 12-year veteran spent half his career with the Vikings and will retire on Friday.

Vikings Chairman Zygi Wilf says Allen was not only a phenomenal player on the field, but he was also a favorite with fans and the organization.

Allen ranks third on the Vikings all-time sack list with 83.5 sacks. With Allen on the roster, Minnesota captured back-to-back NFC North titles in 2008 and 2009. He started 96 regular season and four playoff games during his tenure in Minnesota.

Off the field, Allen created an organization that builds homes for wounded veterans. Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors has built seven homes for veterans.
