Winterkill is showing up in alfalfa stand in parts of the upper Midwest. Pioneer Dairy Specialist Matt Laubach says the fields may appear to be green and healthy, but root digs show the real evidence of winter injury.
He says the most severe winterkill extends from Brooking, South Dakota, north into eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota. He says depending on the damage, some of those fields will be destroyed or replanted.
The damage was a combination of bitter cold and a lack of snow cover in January and recent below freezing temperatures.
