Northern Plains growers who have been facing planting delays this year due to the excessive moisture and spring flooding may want to consider seeding sorghum this year. That’s according to Brent Bean, Director of Agronomy for the National Sorghum Checkoff.
He says one advantage to planting sorghum is that the input costs are not generally as much as they are for corn.
Bean says the optimal time for planting sorghum is now.
He says one mistake growers make sometimes with planting sorghum is thinking because of the lower input costs that they don’t need to fertilizer. Bean says you do need to fertilize and the n amount you use is similar to corn.
