The 2016 Iowa legislative session was a successful one for agriculture. Iowa Farm Bureau President Craig Hill says one of their big wins came early in the session, when lawmakers approved coupling of a federal and state Section 179 depreciation measure.
He says another positive for farmers and ranchers, as well as for rural economic development was approval of a renewable chemical tax credit.
Hill says one disappointment was lawmakers failed to provide enough funding for water quality and the state’s nutrient reduction management strategy.
Hill says farmers have done a great job in improving water quality through the nutrient reduction management strategy. However, a long term funding source is needed to be able to fully address the problem.
