Four ag groups led by the Minnesota Farmers Union are backing Minnesota Congressman Collin Peterson’s legislation to de list the gray wolves in the Great Lakes Region and give states a larger role in listing the species as endangered.
Minnesota Farmers Union President Gary Wertish says the wolves are growing in population and expanding into a large part of their state, sometimes coming into cities.
He says the legislation rightly gives power to the states to control the predators.
Wertish says the wolves cause much damage in a short period of time and the economic losses become very costly for producers.
Wertish is hoping the legislation will advance through the committee and then the full House as well as the Senate.
