President Donald Trump promises agriculture will be the focal point of trade talks with Japan. Nebraska Cattlemen Association President Mike Drinnen says that’s encouraging news because a deal with Japan is a majority priority for Nebraska Cattlemen and NCBA.
Without a bilateral deal with Japan, the U.S. is at risk of losing market share to countries in the Comprehensive Trans Pacific Partnership. Plus, U.S. beef going into Japan will continue to face a tariff rate of 38 percent.
Drinnen says one of the keys to finalizing a trade pact with Japan or any country is the U.S. ratifying the USMCA.
Earlier this month the U.S. and Japan agreed to accelerated trade talks.
