A group of Georgia lawmakers have written to Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue, former Governor of Georgia, asking him to scrap some of the new GIPSA rules. The lawmakers say rescinding the regulations would allow livestock and poultry producers to market their animals how, when and where they want to and without government interference. R-CALF CEO Bill Bullard says those legislators are in the pockets of meat packers.
He says the Georgia lawmakers are attempting to keep packers from obeying competition rules.
Bullard says because the GIPSA rules have been delayed until this fall, there is still time to resolve the problem.
The Georgia lawmakers are claiming the GIPSA rules, if approved, would cost the state’s poultry industry billions of dollars.
