Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says the Trump administration is considering closing the recently re-opened U.S. embassy in Havana, Cuba. That’s following a string of unexplained incidents of threats to American diplomats in Cuba. National Association of Wheat Growers CEO Chandler Goule says any move now to close that embassy would be premature.
He says several steps need to be taken to resume full agricultural trade with Cuba and having the embassy in place is key to that.
Goule says Cuba is a good potential market for U.S. wheat.
Tillerson once referred to the recent incidents as health attacks, but the State Department has since used the term incidents while emphasizing the U.S. still doesn’t know what occurred. Cuba has denied any involvement or responsibility but stressed it’s eager to help the U.S. resolve the matter.
