Three of the largest mergers in the seed and crop protection industry in history are creating concern among farmers and lawmakers, who are holding hearings this month to examine the impact. American Soybean Association Vice President Ron Moore says they are closely watching these marriages to make sure they don’t have a negative impact on farmers and their input costs.
Moore says they’re asking the Justice Department to do a thorough review and reject any or all of the deals if they violate anti-trust laws.
American Soybean Association President Richard Wilkins says while they want the deals scrutinized, agriculture has been consolidating for decades and this is part of that cycle.
He says they’re concerned these companies are deciding to merge to survive long term and if the deals are stymied they may cut back on their investment in technology and innovation, which would also hurt producers.
