Ag Groups Say National Biotech Labeling Urgently Needed

Ag Groups Say National Biotech Labeling Urgently Needed

Several Agricultural groups are concerned over the stalemate in the Senate over Biotech Labeling. The legislation is hung up due to differences between voluntary and mandatory label supporters. Meanwhile not only is Vermont proceeding with their state mandatory regulation that takes effect in July, some food companies are adhering to their rules. South Dakota Corn Growers President Keith Alverson says when the Senate returns from their Easter Recess they need to pass biotech labeling legislation to put a national standard in place.

He says there are some ways mandatory and voluntary advocates can come together on this issue and one way is by using an informational bar code.

Alverson says his group has joined other ag organizations in weighing in with Senators on the need for a national biotech labeling bill.

Vermont’s law is scheduled to go into effect July 1.
