Thirty national and state agricultural groups are calling on the Department of Transportation to reconsider new rules on rail tank cars hauling crude oil and ethanol. National Grain and Feed Association President Randy Gordon says one of the main concerns is that the proposed rule calling for lower train speeds would cause more havoc on an already delayed rail system.
Gordon says another problem with DOT’s proposed rule has to do with requirements regarding retrofitting of rail tank cars.
Gordon says the proposed rule also needs to put more responsibility for derailments on rail carriers.
Gordon says the comment period closed last week and he expects the final rule to come out either at the end of this year or in early 2015.
