Domestic demand is what is driving the hog market. That is according to Dr. Steve Meyer, an agricultural economist with Partners for Production Agriculture. Meyer was the key-note speaker at the SDSU Swine Day held Tuesday at Brookings. Meyer says domestic demand for pork over the last year has been very strong. Meyer informed the gathering that pork exports have dropped somewhat from last year at this time. However, he says Mexico and Latin America should continue to be a bright spot for US pork exports. Meyer says another advantage to exporting pork to Latin American over Southeast Asia is it is easier and cheaper to transport goods south of the border.
