A coalition of 80 agricultural groups led by the Organization for Competitive Markets has written to President Trump asking him to issue an executive order implementing the GIPSA Farmer Fair Practice Rules. Those rules were withdrawn by Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue late last month. OCM Executive Director Joe Maxwell says the rules are needed to protect farmers and ranchers from large corporations who are dictating market terms.
He says they’ve not only written to the President but are also using social media to weigh in on the issue.
Maxwell says the Farmer Fair Practice Rules were intended to be a strengthening of the Packers and Stockyards Act to ensure competitive and fair markets.
When he withdrew the GIPSA rules on October 17, Ag Secretary Perdue said ‘’these are moral actions that I don’t know or believe that regulation and litigation solve.”
