An Ag coalition led by the National Pork Producers Council has sent a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross urging them to lift the Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs placed on Canada and Mexico. NPPC’s Director of International Affairs Maria Zieba one of the reasons the tariffs must be lifted is that benefits from the USMCA won’t materialize without them being lifted.
She says the steel and aluminum tariffs that have been in place on Mexico since last July have caused a great deal of financial loss to the U.S. pork industry.
Zieba says while the partial government shutdown has negatively effected the pork industry, it won’t keep trade negotiators from working out tariff differences with our trading partners.
44 other agricultural groups have joined the NPPC in this coalition asking for lifting of the tariffs.
