An Agricultural Coalition led by the National Farmers Union has filed a petition with the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia in challenging the rewritten EPA Safer Affordable Fuel Efficiency Vehicle Rule. South Dakota Farmers Union President Doug Sombke says the EPA with their rule is failing to follow Title 1 of the Clean Air Act which requires the agency to reduce toxics in gasoline. He says the EPA needs to allow higher blends of biofuels to clean up those toxins.
He says higher biofuel blends not only help farmers and ranchers but also protects the health of the general public.
Sombke says the EPA is ignoring the benefits of biofuels and that the problem could be solved by the President just issuing an executive order requiring the EPA to follow the Clean Air Act.
In their rewritten rule, the EPA established a 1.5 percent increase in efficiency each year for light duty vehicles which is far short of the 5 percent increase that’s contained in the present standard.
