The High Octane Low Carbon Alliance is asking the Environmental Protection Agency to propose a higher octane fuel standard as the agency updates its greenhouse gas emissions standards for passenger vehicles and light duty trucks. South Dakota Farmers Union is part of that coalition. President Doug Sombke says they’re gaining support from more groups for their request including the Alliance for Automobile Innovation.

He says having the auto group join their request squashes the argument the oil industry keeps spouting that biofuels damage engines and that shows that contention isn’t true.

Sombke says pushing for a higher octane and lower carbon rule is a positive response to the negative court rulings lately issued against the biofuels industry.

The High Octane Low Carbon Alliance is comprised of the Clean Fuels Development Coalition, the National Farmers Union, National Corn Grower’s Association and Renewable Fuels Association., the American Farm Bureau Federation, American Coalition for Ethanol and Association of Equipment Manufacturers.
