Several northwestern and north central counties in Iowa have activated winter aeration systems on their lakes. Oxygen levels in lakes drop during the winter. Scott Grummer, fisheries biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says the systems are to prevent fish kills.
Grummer says the system includes several blowers and air lines, and lake users should take caution.
The lakes with systems currently running include Five Island, Ingham, Center, Silver, Crystal, and Rice Lakes. Systems will be started at Clear and Little Wall Lakes in the next few weeks.
