United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer told the Senate Finance Committee this week when renegotiating NAFTA he’s prepared to continue to work until a high standard agreement is reached. He also wants trade deals enforced. Coalition for a Prosperous America CEO Michael Stumo likes Lighthizer’s tougher stance and is glad the administration is pushing for trade enforcement.
He says beyond redoing NAFTA, there is a bigger need to address the current trade deficit the U.S. has with other trading partners. Stumo says he’ll testify next week at a NAFTA hearing hosted by Lighthizer.
Stumo says besides enforcement the Trump administration needs to focus on tariffs, currency manipulation and foreign taxes with any bilateral trade discussions.
The U.S. is scheduled to post its NAFTA renegotiation goals July 17 following a series of renegotiation public hearings.
