A delegation from Yankton County, the City of Yankton and the Yankton Area Chamber of Commerce recently met with federal officials in Washington.
Yankton Mayor Nathan Johnson says they talked with Corps of Engineers officials, and got some numbers on the rapidly shrinking capacity of Lewis & Clark Lake…….
Sediment has been flowing into the lake since Gavins Point Dam was closed in the late 1950s.
Johnson says that information brought up more questions……
Johnson says they were told that a local government can ask for a study that may point toward some solutions……
The Corps has predicted that the lake may lose most of its usefulness in the next thirty to fifty years unless the sediment is moved.
