The acreage battle is on for the 2021 crop season and the higher grain prices and higher input costs may still play a role in what farmers plant this spring. DEKALB/Asgrow Agronomist Jeff Fuhls says the recent spike in fertilizer prices may lead to a few more soybean acres being planted where farmers didn’t get applications made last fall.
DEKALB/Asgrow Agronomist Jeff Spieler says for farmers to choose additional soybeans verses corn, the price needs to be at more than 2.5 to 1 ratio.
The biggest acreage change in the region may take place in North Dakota. Rick Swenson, agronomist with Peterson Farms Seed says farmers had almost 3 million acres of prevented plant in the state last year that may come back into production and those acres are up for grabs.
In Iowa it is also anticipated there will also be more corn-on-corn acres switched to soybeans in the areas that were hit by the derecho in 2020.
