This week the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa along with some animal rights groups filed a federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the state’s ag gag law. The law makes it a misdemeanor to lie on a farm job application with the intent of harming the farm operation. The penalty for conviction is a year in jail and or a $ 1500 fine. ACLU’s Veronica Fowler says the Iowa law’s penalties are much too severe.
She says Iowa’s ag gag law infringes on citizen’s rights and is unconstitutional.
Fowler says one problem with the current Iowa law is that it gives protection to only agricultural operations for abusive actions.
Fowler says they’re asking the federal court to declare Iowa’s ag gag law a violation of the U.S. constitution, to strike it down and to enter an order blocking the state from enforcing it.
