ACLU Nebraska says changes need to be made to insure civil forfeiture laws aren’t abused.
Amy Miller with ACLU Nebraska says law enforcement faced with a duffel bag of drugs and a duffel bag of cash during a stop can not only seize the drugs, but the money. Miller says civil forfeiture laws were designed to hit the pocketbook of drug lords. . .
Miller says the incentive for law enforcement to take property needs to be removed. . .
The ACLU also backs allowing civil forfeitures only when a criminal conviction has been made. It suggests removing the financial incentive for seizures and increasing transparency of how seized money is spent.
