Abortion Waiting Periods Could go to Court

Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa are going to court, asking a judge to issue an emergency order that blocks implementation of a three-day waiting period for abortions in Iowa. Governor Terry Branstad plans to sign the Republican-led legislature’s 20-week abortion ban into law tomorrow. (Friday).

Rita Bettis, the legal director for the A-C-L-U of Iowa, says quick legal action is necessary because the bill was written to take effect immediately.

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland C-E-O Suzanna de Baca says the “burden” of the three-day waiting period will have a devastating impact to women who live in rural Iowa, as well as low-income women.

A judge has scheduled a hearing this (Thursday) afternoon in Polk County District Court to hear the legal arguments for an emergency court order that would block the three-day waiting period from going into immediate effect.
