The Iowa House has voted to require doctors to offer women seeking an abortion the opportunity to see an ultrasound image and hear the heartbeat of the fetus. The bill passed on a 57 to 39 vote. Representative Joel Fry, a Republican from Osceola, was the bill’s floor manager.
Senator Sharon Steckman, a Democrat from Mason City, opposed the bill.
The bill faces a dim future in the Iowa Senate. Democrats control the debate agenda there and attempts to restrict abortion in the past have failed in the senate.
