A current Nebraska State Senator and a former one don’t see the Unicameral being able to pass a property tax relief bill this session. Senator Steve Erdman says the Governor’s plan to put money into the property tax credit fund won’t achieve the needed relief.

Former State Senator Al Davis says the most recent bill brought forward in the Revenue Committee, LB 974 that calls for an additional $520 million into state aid to schools over three years in an effort to lower property taxes won’t likely get approved, mainly due to opposition from large school districts.

Erdman says property taxes can’t be lowered unless spending is cut.

Both Davis and Erdman think that if the Unicameral fails to pass property tax relief, there will be a huge effort to pass the ballot initiative calling for property tax reduction through a Constitutional Amendment.
