There will be a legislative hearing in Lincoln Thursday on LB289, a bill that would change provisions and penalties relating to pandering, human trafficking, labor trafficking and sex trafficking and prohibit solicitation of a trafficking victim. Meghan Malick is the project manager of the Women’s Fund of Omaha and says sex trafficking has changed over the years.
Malick says the penalties for soliciting are no more than a slap on the wrist.
Malick says in Nebraska if you are caught purchasing someone for sex the fine is $250 and plea deals often take that down to $99. LB 289 would increase fines for individuals soliciting sex and those targeting a minor would be classified as a sex trafficker.
