2015 has been a good year for hay production across the country and that has pushed prices below year ago levels. National Hay Association Vice President and Gayville, South Dakota producer Amy Freeburg says moisture has been ample in much of the country so tonnage has been up, but it’s been a struggle to put up hay.

She says hay production has been good and acreage is up slightly in the U.S. which has put a little pressure on prices.

However, Freeburg says dairy quality alfalfa is still running about $1 per point, which is generally based on feed quality components like dry matter and protein.

She says most of their hay has been moving east like usual and they haven’t had increased demand with the isolated weather issues in California and the northwest U.S.
