Groups Appealing COOL Injunction Decision

The National Pork Producers Council and eight other U.S. and Canadian meat processing groups are appealing a judge’s decision to deny an injunction in the Country of Origin Labeling lawsuit.  They are all suing USDA for the revised COOL rule.  NPPC’s Dave Warner says the appeal process could take some time.

Warner says the fear is if the revised COOL law stands, both Canada and Mexico will retaliate with tariffs on a number of U.S products including pork.  They, along with Canada and Mexico don’t think the COOL regulation is in compliance with WTO trade rules.

Warner expects the WTO to hand down a decision on the new COOL law in the third or fourth quarter of 2014.
